At yesterday's Quiksilver Pro - the crowd were also entertained by a surfing display of some of the greats of the beginnings of competitive surfing.
These guys gave us the sport, and part of the lifestyle that we now tke for granted!
Judged by Hawaiian (Sunset) Master Jeff Hakman, the Mitchell Surfing Foundation (MSF) offered a US$500 incentive for the best performance in the Masters Session. The winning vote going to Simon Anderson - inventor of the three-fined thruster design used by the vast majority of surfers worldwide today.
Anderson then immediately donated the money to nearby Burleigh Heads Boardriders Club junior development program.
"I hadn't really trained for that," said Anderson after his great session. "But I would have paid five hundred dollars to surf out there."
Simon’s charitable attitude deserves a special applause – especially when you remember that this man received no money for introducing the thruster surfboard design to literally millions of surfers.
The event's commentators, Matt Griggs and Sean Doherty, made a joke when they said that if everyone who owned a thruster gave him $1 – then he would be a rich man.
We reckon that this is not such a bad idea, and we told him that, so if you see him walking around the contest site – and YOU own a thruster - give him a dollar. … we reckon that he would probably give it to a worthwhile growth area of surfing anyway – because he’s that kind of guy!
