Facing almost due South - Bondi misses a lot of the really big East, or North East swells. However, small swells can work off the second bank, and due to the high fluctuating tide it can be a lot of fun for longboarders. Local longboard clubs meet there regularly on a Sunday.
Obviously, it gets 'very'crowded on the weekends - and it's pretty hard to expect a wave to yourself in those times.
But don't be fooled - when it does work it can be a really 'hot' short board wave, particularly at the most south end, where underwater rocks extend about 30m out from the rock face, and a large swell peaking off the first bank can create a left hander that increases in power as the water becomes shallower over the rocks.
In these times there quickly becomes no room for learners as the 'hot doggity' locals take to the water.
In, or after a storm or on a direct south or south easterly swell, it can get quite large too - peaking at a 6 or 7 ft solid wave.
Winter can see some north end pearlers also, as the flags are removed.
As for the shape, well it depends on the right combination of 2 things. - The banks that have formed, and the right tide to match.
