Coolangatta local and the current world #3 Mick Fanning has held his cool, to win his 2nd Quiksilver Pro Australia title, and get a huge ’leg-up’ in a committed title race for the 2007 season.
After a narrow escape in his Quarter-Final clash with another local Coolangatta surfer, former Air Champion and rookie WCT competitor Josh Kerr the 24 year old Fanning went on to face off with North Stradbroke Islander (also Gold Coast) Bede Durbridge who had knocked out an in-form Kelly Slater in their semi final clash.
Both of these heats were classified by the commentators as possibly the ’best’ two heats in the history of the event. In the Fanning/Kerr clash, Mick was combo-ed with 5 minutes to go, Josh sitting on two 9 point scores. Suddenly Mick clicked in, and pulled out two 9+ scores to win.(… the barrels had started rolling in)
In the Slater/Durbridge clash, Bede had set-up a commanding lead, leaving Slater to chip away at achieving the high scores. In a trade off of barrels, he gradually did just that, hitting the front near the end of the heat. But then Durbridge came back to life, finding a super barrel and wall wave to take the heat.
